These karakia can be spoken to Matariki in winter just before the sun rises. Each one has a specific purpose such as honouring the dead, acknowledging the different environmental domains and opening the New Year. Matariki guidance and public logo pack

Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage has published guidance to help all New Zealanders celebrate Matariki and ensure mātauranga Māori remains at the heart of this important kaupapa.

The Mānawatia a Matariki tohu is a copyrighted work which was commissioned by Te Arawhiti and designed by Extended Whānau.

The official Matariki public holiday logo is available for everyone to use for non-commercial use.

Matariki is deeply intertwined with Māori culture. If you are looking to support, participate or whakanui i a Matariki, please ensure it is for genuine reasons. This logo cannot be used in association with alcohol, gambling or fast food.

Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | The Ministry of Education has developed a new set of curriculum resources, to support kōhanga reo, early learning, kura and schools to recognise and celebrate the inaugural Matariki rā whakatā ā-ture in their communities.
